The Tradition of Hunting
Hunting on horseback has a long and storied history, dating back centuries. It evolved from a necessity for survival into a sport, particularly in Europe, where it became closely associated with aristocracy and tradition.
In the Middle Ages, hunting was essential for providing food and also served as a way for nobility to demonstrate their skills and bravery. Kings and lords often participated in hunts with large entourages, targeting deer, boar, and other game. Over time, hunting transitioned into a more structured pastime, with specific rules, etiquette, and customs forming.
Fox hunting, which is perhaps the most iconic form of hunting on horseback in Britain, originated in the 16th century. It became especially popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, with hunters chasing foxes using a pack of trained hounds. It was both a social and sporting event, involving landowners and the upper classes, and requiring a well-trained horse capable of jumping fences and navigating challenging terrain.
Beyond the British Isles, mounted hunting traditions have existed in many cultures. For example, Mongolian and Central Asian nomads historically relied on horseback hunting to sustain their communities.
Today, while some forms of traditional hunting have become more regulated or even banned, the sport continues in various forms. Modern fox hunting, for instance, has shifted to “drag hunting,” where hounds follow a laid scent rather than a live fox. Throughout its evolution, hunting on horseback remains a symbol of heritage, skill, and horsemanship.
Whilst viewed as a controversial activity by some, people of all ages condition to enjoy the tradition of hunting every year and will be preparing their horses for the season ahead. Adjusting the horses diet and building fitness, ensuring they’re comfortable with jumping and group riding, and getting them used to hounds and varied terrain are key to having your horse hunting ready. Many owners of the ArcEquine use the ARC to support their horse during the physically demanding hunting season.
