Return to Case Studies

I am a 63 year old lady and I have ridden and been involved with horses from childhood. I have rarely fallen off and certainly never broken any part of my body. However, this all changed on Friday September 30th.

I was riding a horse that I knew well and I was leading another from my left hand side, a friend was riding with me and she was was also riding one horse and leading another. We were trotting around a field margin when some partridge flew out of the hedgerow and spooked the horses. The one I was riding shot forward and the horse I was leading pulled back. I was pulled off and hit the ground hard. As l lay on the grass looking at eight legs disappearing I had the sinking feeling that my left arm was broken.

My worse fear was confirmed by X-ray, not only had I badly broken my humerus, I also had a spiral fracture going into my shoulder joint. My consultant informed me that the break was too complex to plate and pin and that it would be best to let my body try to heal its self. I was put in a plastic and Velcro cast to immobilise my arm and shoulder and told that it would take a minimum of 12 weeks before the cast could be removed.

I was bruised from my shoulder to my elbow and across my chest. My arm was swollen as was my hand and fingers, I could not move my arm at all as I had to wear a sling to support my lower arm. I was well and truly on box rest for 3 months.

I posted on my social media that I was injured and a friend suggested I try using an Arc to speed my healing time. So with support from the team at Arc I began using the micro current therapy on October 23rd, almost three weeks after my injury. I found the unit very easy to program and use, each cycle of microcurrent therapy lasts for 3hours and when this was complete I reset the delivery unit and and used it again, this way I maximised the use of the therapy during a 24 hour period.

My consultant had requested that I was re X-rayed 7 weeks after my accident, so on November 21st I attended the fracture clinic, hoping that the X-ray would show I was healing. The result was amazing, my fractured humerus was indeed healing, the consultant was amazed at how well I was doing and took the decision to remove my cast and recommend that I start physiotherapy. I was elated, I had managed to cut my recovery time by 5 weeks and this had to be due in part to my constant use of the Arc.

I have commenced my physiotherapy at Oaksey House Lambourn, which is run by the Injured Jockeys fund. I am continuing to use the Arc unit to support my recovery as I really believe it has been instrumental in my rapid progress back to mobility.

I have no hesitation in recommending the use of an Arc for speeding up recovery time from injuries.
