What are Sarcoids?

Sarcoids in horses are persistent, locally invasive skin tumours that commonly occur around the head, axilla (armpit), and groin regions. They are a type of skin tumour that does not typically spread to internal organs and are therefore classified as benign. (1) They behave like malignant tumours by invading surrounding tissues and frequently recurring after treatment. (2)

Why Sarcoids can be difficult to manage

Equine sarcoids occur in several distinct forms, and as a result, a treatment that is effective for one type may prove ineffective for another. Conventional treatment options include surgical excision, cryosurgery (freezing), laser surgery, and other veterinary interventions. However, because sarcoids are associated with a viral infection, affected tissues may continue to harbour the virus even after treatment, increasing the risk of recurrence. Consequently, many alternative treatments fail to address the underlying cause of the condition and may therefore provide only a temporary solution. (1)
