Return to Case Studies

My horse became ataxic after being cast under a fence. X-ray showed a fractured wing of C5 and bony changes at C5 – the significance was unclear. There was a probable traumatic spinal cord injury and a weakness in the fore & hind limbs, the right hind being severe. He was unable to back up.

Whilst in hospital he improved & was discharged 10 days post injury. However he still had evident weakness. Although the prognosis was unclear, the early improvement in the ataxia and fractured wing suggested potential for recovery.

In total, my horse was in hospital for 10 days and had IV fluids, high doses of anti-inflammatories and high doses of steroids to try and help the ataxia and fractured wing. He was allowed to be hand walked and also turned out in a small flat paddock if the ground was good and he remained sensible. These were both only allowed because he is normally very placid and showed at the vets that he was not going to be silly.

The ArcEquine was applied from 10 days post injury to help with the ataxia and healing of the fractured wing. It was used daily for almost 4 weeks as well as hand walking for 20 minutes a day (the ground was too wet for turnout).

The results show that the strength in hind limbs had improved dramatically after using ArcEquine, and he is now able to pick up all four feet for routine hoof care with no loss of balance. Toe dragging has stopped and gait on a large circle and straight line looks normal. He is able to back up without difficulty. Minimal weakness can be shown on very tight turns, but that is improving as well.

I have been recommending the ArcEquine to friends!
